Nearly 14 years to the day after the filming of Nirvana's landmark "MTV Unplugged" performance, that raw, revealing and emotionally gripping acoustic concert previously seen only on television will be available for the first time on DVD. "Unplugged In New York" (Geffen/MTV Networks/UMe) will be released on November 20, 2007 and will feature the complete, unedited 66-minute concert including "Something In The Way" and "Oh, Me" not aired during the original 44-minute broadcast. "Unplugged In New York" also includes five previously unreleased rehearsal performances and MTV News interviews with the band and audience members.
Filmed November 18, 1993 at Sony Music Studios, the show first aired on MTV on December 14, 1993; just four months before the untimely passing of Kurt Cobain. "Unplugged In New York" DVD is now presented in both Dolby Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound and includes both the shorter original broadcast version, and Nirvana's entire unedited performance. When released on CD in November 1994, "MTV Unplugged In New York" debuted #1, won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996 and was quickly certified five times platinum.
Favoring a selection of carefully chosen tracks over the band's hits, Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl perform acoustic versions of Nirvana's "About A Girl," "Come As You Are," "Pennyroyal Tea," "Dumb," "Polly," "On A Plain," "Something In The Way" and "All Apologies." Six other songs are covers that mined Nirvana's musical diversity and depth, from David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World" and The Vaselines' version of "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam" to the trad folk "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" associated with Leadbelly and the Meat Puppets' "Plateau," "Oh, Me" and "Lake Of Fire." Meat Puppets singer-guitarist Curt Kirkwood and bassist brother Cris Kirkwood perform with Nirvana on those tracks. Also seen and heard throughout are Nirvana's touring guitarist Pat Smear, an original Germs member and the original and now recurrent guitarist of The Foo Fighters.
The DVD adds the MTV News "Bare Witness" feature of interviews with the band, the MTV production staff, and fans in the audience, plus the rehearsal footage for "Come As You Are," "Polly," "Plateau," "Pennyroyal Tea" and "The Man Who Sold The World."

Classic Albums : Nevermind DVD
There possibly isn't an album in history that is as genre defining as NIRVANA's "Nevermind." Released in 1991, it single-handedly was responsible for the birth of what became to be known as grunge and has gone on to sell over 8 million copies in the US alone.
"Nevermind" was the second album from the Seattle trio and the first on the DGC label (it's predecessor "Bleach" was released on the Sub Pop label). It was produced by Butch Vig (also the drummer for the band Garbage) and mixed by Andy Wallace.
Nirvana's surviving members Krist Novoselic (bass) and Dave Grohl (drums) talk candidly about their past, the recording of Nevermind and about Kurt Cobain and the legacy that he has left behind. Also featured are exclusive interviews with the likes of Garry Gersh (A&R DGC Records), Butch Vig, Jonathan Ponneman and Nils Bernstein (Sub Pop Records), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Jack Endino, and many more.
Bonus features
Drain You - the story behind the making of the track.
Going To Record In LA - The story behind why the band recorded Nevermind in LA.
Dave Grohl Joins Nirvana - The story of how Dave Grohl came to join Nirvana.
Polly (Live) - Polly live in concert.
Nevermind - The Album Sleeve - The story of the album cover including interviews with the cover star.

Billboard article about the box set:
With numerous releases flowing through stores in the next several weeks, many retailers are most excited about the Nirvana boxed set, "With the Lights Out," which comes out Nov. 23.
The defunct grunge trio's Geffen Records collection "could be the biggest boxed set of all time," says Bryan Everitt, director of music purchasing for Amarillo, Texas-based Hastings Entertainment. "I don't think there is a more dedicated fan than the Nirvana fan."
Musicland senior music buyer Scott Faragher also smells a hit.
"Nirvana's boxed set will be the most sought-after boxed set this year," he says. "It will appeal to the original Nirvana fan and also (to) the legions of new alternative rock fans, since Nirvana, to most people, was the beginning of the genre."

Top Story: Nirvana Box Set Details Leaked
According to reports, a press release detailing the previously unreleased tracks that will appear on the massively anticipated Nirvana CD and DVD box set has been leaked online, and Xfm has all the details…
The tracklisting of the Nirvana box set 'With the Lights Out' has been shrouded in secrecy since news of the compilation surfaced earlier this year. Not surprisingly as the previously unreleased tracks, demos and radio sessions
included are the Holy Grail for many of the band’s fans.
However there have been reports that a press release has been sent out in Germany concerning the box set - listing the five songs that will appear on a promotional sampler given to radio stations and certain retail stores. Included are:
‘White Lace And Strange’ - Previously unreleased radio performance (1987)
‘Blandest’ - Previously unreleased demo (1988)
‘Lithium’ - Previously unreleased solo acoustic track (1990)
‘Heart-Shaped Box’ - Previously unreleased demo (1993)
‘You Know You're Right’ - Previously unreleased solo acoustic (1994)
The tracks ‘White Lace and Strange’, ‘Blandest’ and the acoustic version of ‘Lithium’ have surfaced on bootlegs, but the quality of the official versions are expected to be far superior. Also expected to be included are songs taken from some of the band’s Radio 1 sessions for the late John Peel, studio outtakes, live recording, a Butch Vig raw mix of ‘Teen Spirit’ and a collection of Kurt Cobain's demo recordings culled from the 109 tapes of Kurt's hoem demos owned by Courtney Love.
An official statement from Nirvana’s record company Geffen has also confirmed the release date of November 23. It reads.
“Geffen/UMe Records is set to release a much anticipated 3 CD 1 DVD box set of Nirvana. 81 tracks are included on the box of which 68 have never been previously issued. Material for the CD's spans the band's entire history from their inception and includes demos, outtakes and live recordings. The DVD shows never seen before footage of the band at rehearsals, recording studios and live shows."
The complete tracklisting of the box is not yet available, but according to Geffen, a detailed running order will be available in the coming weeks.

Nirvana put the 'lights out' with 68-track box set
The long awaited Nirvana box set "With the Lights Out" will feature almost 70 rare tracks, soundgenerator can report.
The 3-CD set, which was confirmed earlier this month after a delay of several years, will feature 81 tracks in total, with almost 70 tracks from 1987-1994 consisting of rare live recordings, studio outtakes and a selection of Kurt Cobain's home demos.
Set for release November 23, the package will also include a DVD featuring previously unseen material - including early home movies and secret recording sessions in Rio de Janeiro - and a 60-page book with liner notes from Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore.
"With the Lights Out" was due for release in December 2001 to coincide with the 10-year anniversary of Nirvana's seminal "Nevermind" album. But legal wrangling between Courtney Love and surviving band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic meant the release was shelved. Love's objection came from their planned use of the unreleased track "You Know You're Right" in the set.
A new music video for an as-yet-undisclosed track, as well as a TV special, are also being planned. - SoundGenerator.com
13th October 2004
The long-awaited Nirvana box set 'WITH THE LIGHTS OUT' will feature 68 previously unreleased recordings.
Released on November 22, the four-disc set will feature 81 tracks including 68 previously unreleased recordings - rehearsals, outtakes, Kurt's home demos, as well as a DVD which is confirmed to have unreleased band home movies, live footage, rehearsal footage and 20 full-length video performances. A 60-page booklet will accompany the release.
The title is a reference to a lyric in 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.
A source told NME.COM: “I’ve seen some of the footage and it’s amazing stuff. There’s a video of them performing at a friend's party with Kurt reading lyrics off a sheet of paper on the wall, footage of them covering 'Seasons In The Sun' in a studio with Kurt on drums and lots of other great stuff.”
The artwork for the set is currently being put together, with the likely choice being a ‘landscape’ box... - NME.com
