“Nirvana headlining at Reading in 1992 was something you had to see, and if you didn’t see it then it was something you pretended you saw.”
- Kerrang (October 2003)

“The staggering energy and intensity radiating from the stage never let up… Cobain’s ravaged pop songs coming off like some dream marriage of the Sex Pistols and the Beatles, borne on bracing waves of distorted guitar noise.”
- Rolling Stone (October 29, 1992)

Ranked #1 in Kerrang Magazine’s “100 Gigs That Shook The World” and voted as “Nirvana’s #1 Greatest Moment” by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana’s historic August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the UK’s Reading Festival is one of the most bootlegged concerts in the annals of rock’n'roll.

Now, fans will have an opportunity to own a pristine copy of that entire performance — color-corrected video from the original film with audio sourced from the original multi-track masters.

Nirvana Live At Reading will be issued in a limited edition CD+DVD Deluxe Edition as well as DVD-only, CD-only configurations on November 3, 2009, followed by a 2 LP version on November 17, 2009.

While the show’s centerpiece was a performance of nearly the entire Nevermind tracklist, also noteworthy were early performances of three as yet unrecorded songs which wouldn’t be released until 2 years later on In Utero: “All Apologies,” “Dumb,” and in its first ever public performance, “Tourette’s.”

The career-spanning setlist also reached back to the band’s 1989 Sub Pop debut album, Bleach, for “Blew,” “About A Girl,” “School,” “Negative Creep” and first single “Love Buzz,” and even further back to the mid-’80s for “Spank Thru.”

Other songs from the Reading set would appear in studio form on the Incesticide compilation later in the year: “Aneurysm,” “Been A Son” and “Sliver.” Additionally, the band played a pair of beloved covers by two bands that helped shape the formative Nirvana sound — “The Money Will Roll Right In” by Fang and “D-7″ by The Wipers.

Bleach 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Marking the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana’s debut album, Sub Pop will re-issue the Platinum Certified Bleach on November 3, 2009. This expanded CD/double-LP will include a never-before-released live performance, special packaging and the first run of the double-LP will be on 180g white vinyl (the first run of the original LP was also on white vinyl).

Originally recorded over three sessions with producer Jack Endino at Seattle’s Reciprocal Recording Studios in December 1988 and January 1989, Bleach was released in June of ’89 and remains unequivocally/unsurprisingly Sub Pop’s very favorite Nirvana full-length. The album initially sold 40,000 copies, but was brought into the international spotlight following the release and worldwide success of their 1991sophomore effort, Nevermind. Subsequently Bleach went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the US alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This 20th Anniversary Edition has been re-mastered from the original tapes at Sterling Sound in a session overseen by producer Jack Endino.

This edition will include an unreleased live recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The show features performances of “Love Buzz,” “About a Girl” and a cover of The Vaselines’ song “Molly’s Lips” and has been re-mixed from the original tapes by Endino (complete track listing below). A 48-page CD booklet which includes candid photos of the band not previously released to the public will also be included in this deluxe edition.

Nearly 14 years to the day after the filming of Nirvana’s landmark “MTV Unplugged” performance, that raw, revealing and emotionally gripping acoustic concert previously seen only on television will be available for the first time on DVD. “Unplugged In New York” (Geffen/MTV Networks/UMe) will be released on November 20, 2007 and will feature the complete, unedited 66-minute concert including “Something In The Way” and “Oh, Me” not aired during the original 44-minute broadcast. “Unplugged In New York” also includes five previously unreleased rehearsal performances and MTV News interviews with the band and audience members.

Filmed November 18, 1993 at Sony Music Studios, the show first aired on MTV on December 14, 1993; just four months before the untimely passing of Kurt Cobain. “Unplugged In New York” DVD is now presented in both Dolby Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound and includes both the shorter original broadcast version, and Nirvana’s entire unedited performance. When released on CD in November 1994, “MTV Unplugged In New York” debuted #1, won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996 and was quickly certified five times platinum.

Favoring a selection of carefully chosen tracks over the band’s hits, Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl perform acoustic versions of Nirvana’s “About A Girl,” “Come As You Are,” “Pennyroyal Tea,” “Dumb,” “Polly,” “On A Plain,” “Something In The Way” and “All Apologies.” Six other songs are covers that mined Nirvana’s musical diversity and depth, from David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” and The Vaselines’ version of “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam” to the trad folk “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” associated with Leadbelly and the Meat Puppets’ “Plateau,” “Oh, Me” and “Lake Of Fire.” Meat Puppets singer-guitarist Curt Kirkwood and bassist brother Cris Kirkwood perform with Nirvana on those tracks. Also seen and heard throughout are Nirvana’s touring guitarist Pat Smear, an original Germs member and the original and now recurrent guitarist of The Foo Fighters.

The DVD adds the MTV News “Bare Witness” feature of interviews with the band, the MTV production staff, and fans in the audience, plus the rehearsal footage for “Come As You Are,” “Polly,” “Plateau,” “Pennyroyal Tea” and “The Man Who Sold The World.”

Classic Albums: Nevermind DVD

Nirvana - Classic Albums - Nevermind DVD

There possibly isn’t an album in history that is as genre defining as NIRVANA’s “Nevermind.” Released in 1991, it single-handedly was responsible for the birth of what became to be known as grunge and has gone on to sell over 8 million copies in the US alone.”Nevermind” was the second album from the Seattle trio and the first on the DGC label (it’s predecessor “Bleach” was released on the Sub Pop label). It was produced by Butch Vig (also the drummer for the band Garbage) and mixed by Andy Wallace.

Nirvana’s surviving members Krist Novoselic (bass) and Dave Grohl (drums) talk candidly about their past, the recording of Nevermind and about Kurt Cobain and the legacy that he has left behind. Also featured are exclusive interviews with the likes of Garry Gersh (A&R DGC Records), Butch Vig, Jonathan Ponneman and Nils Bernstein (Sub Pop Records), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Jack Endino, and many more.

Bonus features

  • Drain You - the story behind the making of the track.
  • Going To Record In LA - The story behind why the band recorded Nevermind in LA.
  • Dave Grohl Joins Nirvana - The story of how Dave Grohl came to join Nirvana.
  • Polly (Live) - Polly live in concert.
  • Nevermind - The Album Sleeve - The story of the album cover including interviews with the cover star.

Billboard article about the box set

With numerous releases flowing through stores in the next several weeks, many retailers are most excited about the Nirvana boxed set, “With the Lights Out,” which comes out Nov. 23. The defunct grunge trio’s Geffen Records collection “could be the biggest boxed set of all time,” says Bryan Everitt, director of music purchasing for Amarillo, Texas-based Hastings Entertainment. “I don’t think there is a more dedicated fan than the Nirvana fan.”

Musicland senior music buyer Scott Faragher also smells a hit.

“Nirvana’s boxed set will be the most sought-after boxed set this year,” he says. “It will appeal to the original Nirvana fan and also (to) the legions of new alternative rock fans, since Nirvana, to most people, was the beginning of the genre.”

With The Lights Out - Box Set Release

Trailer: Quicktime - Windows Media - Real Media

Geffen/UME is set to release the much-anticipated 3-CD/1-DVD box set With The Lights Out on November 23, 2004.

The box set contains 81 tracks, 68 which were previously unreleased.

The box set spans Nirvana’s entire career, from a recording of Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker” at the band’s first show in 1987 to solo acoustic performances from singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain in 1994. With The Lights Out features a 60-page color booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and writer Neil Strauss.

The three CDs, arranged largely chronologically contains home and rehearsal demos, including for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (whose lyric “With the lights out” provides the set’s title), “Rape Me,” “Heart Shaped Box” and a trio penned by legendary bluesman Leadbelly.

Heard in the 12 previously unreleased solo acoustic tracks are such gems as “All Apologies,” “Lithium” and “Sliver.” Six previously unreleased radio performances range from “Anorexorcist” in 1987 to “Dumb” in 1991 (two years before it was on 1993’s In Utero). Along with the remaining debuts are a handful of earlier issued, though rare, b-sides and demos as well as the original Butch Vig mix of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Highlighted on the With The Lights Out DVD is a previously unreleased video of nine songs performed in 1988 at bassist Krist Novoselic’s mother’s house in Aberdeen, Washington; the rare “In Bloom” Sub Pop music video, and 10 never-before-seen live performances. Noteworthy among them are debut renditions of “Pennyroyal Tea”, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” both from early 1991.
Also premiering is an unlikely performance of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen’s “Seasons In The Sun” shot at a Rio de Janeiro studio.

Nirvana debuted on album with 1989’s Bleach (years later going platinum), followed by the EP Blew, each on Seattle-based Sub Pop. Drummer Dave Grohl joined in fall 1990 and soon after the band signed to Geffen Records. Nevermind (1991), propelled by the platinum Top 10 anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and its landmark music video, hit #1 and is now 10 times platinum. Up next were the Top 40, platinum Incesticide (1992) and the #1, quintuple platinum In Utero (1993). In April 1994, Cobain committed suicide. Issued posthumously have been 1994’s MTV Unplugged In New York (#1, quintuple platinum), 1996’s live compilation From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah (#1, platinum) and 2002’s “best of” Nirvana (#3, platinum).

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was a confirmed Sonic Youth fanatic - the two bands’ 1991 European tour is chronicled on the video ‘1991: The Year That Punk Broke’. -

Box Set News

The long-awaited Nirvana box set ‘WITH THE LIGHTS OUT’ will feature 68 previously unreleased recordings. Released on November 22, the four-disc set will feature 81 tracks including 68 previously unreleased recordings - rehearsals, outtakes, Kurt’s home demos, as well as a DVD which is confirmed to have unreleased band home movies, live footage, rehearsal footage and 20 full-length video performances. A 60-page booklet will accompany the release.

The title is a reference to a lyric in ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.

A source told NME.COM: “I’ve seen some of the footage and it’s amazing stuff. There’s a video of them performing at a friend’s party with Kurt reading lyrics off a sheet of paper on the wall, footage of them covering ‘Seasons In The Sun’ in a studio with Kurt on drums and lots of other great stuff.”

The artwork for the set is currently being put together, with the likely choice being a ‘landscape’ box… -
